Information & Tours
Papua New Guinea is rightly as an ornithological last frontier and as such many
rare areas are visited. The tours cover a wide range of habitats and altitude
zones with the main emphasis on seeing as many Birds of Paradise, Bowerbirds and
other endemic species as possible. On
arrival in Port Moresby explore Variarata National Park where you may expect to
see, Brown-headed Paradise-Kingfisher, chestnut-backed Jewel-babbler, Dwarf Whistler,
Eastern Riflebird and Ragianna Bird of Paradise among many more delightful species.
Next there is the Kikori River region, largely unexplored. This is home to a large
array of birds including Bryth's Hornbill, Palm Cockatoo, Vulture Parrot, Eclectus
Parrot and Southern Cassowary.
In the Kiunga area, famous for its wonderful display tree of the Greater Bird
of Paradise. He you can hope to see the incredible Flame Bowerbird, long-Billed
Cuckoo, Hooded Pitta, Blue Jewel-babbler and many other sought after species.
The Elevala River should provide Southern Crowned Pigeon and the fantastic Twelve-wired
Bird of Paradise, the Lesser Paradise-Kingfisher, White-bellied Pitohui and Painted
Quail-thrush. Tabubil offers many more birds including Carola's Parotia, Magnificent
Riflebird, Obscure Berrypecker and the totally weird Greater Melampitta.
An almost unexplored area near Mt. Hagen you may see birds which are incredibly
tame. They include male Ribbon-tailed Astrapia, Brown Sicklebill and Crested Bird
of paradise feeding close to the Lodge. At Baiyer River Sanctuary there are several
display trees of the Lesser Bird of Paradise and there is Dwarf Cassowary.
The Tari Basin is home to many spectacular Birds of Paradise including King of
Saxony and Blue Birds of Paradise, Stephanie's and Ribbon-tailed Astrapia, Lawes'
Parotia and Short-tailed Paradigalla. The Tari Gap is a great birding area and
holds many endemic species including the magnificent Papuan Lorikeet, Plum-faced
Lorikeet, Chestnut Forest-Rail, Lesser Melampitta, Crested and Tit Berrypeckers
and many more. An
extension to West New Britain and Manus Island is also offered. West New Britain
holds a wide range of Fruit Doves and Imperial Pigeons as well as massive Violaceous
Coucal, Blue-eyed Cockatoo, Black-head Paradise Kngfisher, white mantled Kingfisher
and many more endemic species. Manus Island is our final destination where the
target species is the well named Superb Pitta, very rare endemic to this one islands.

Pymy-Parrot, Manus Boobook and more. Goroka
